We had a big brother come in today to check on his new baby! He is proficient in the Doppler AND fetoscope!!
Welcoming a new baby is a family event. Not only did big sister have the opportunity to witness her mama’s strength, but she helped catch her baby sister and (eventually) cut the umbilical cord!

Today, we are making sure that our hearing machine is in tip-top shape and ready to go! We have to calibrate this every year to keep it in good working order, making sure that we are taking the absolute best care of your baby that we can!
This is one of the things that your midwife’s fee goes towards. There are many behind-the-scenes fees that go into taking care of mamas and babies. Each one is paid with thoughtful consideration on how it will best serve YOU!!
If you ever peek over the shoulder of a midwife who is scrolling through her phone in the hours or days following a birth, you are very likely to see a picture of a placenta. Midwives LOVE placentas - they are these miraculous organs that we grow to sustain and protect our babies. They know they are temporary, and so they are released from us when they receive the signal that they are no longer needed.
Unless there is a medical reason, we don’t rush the birth of the placenta. The signals it receives as the flow of blood returning from the baby starts to diminish are SO important. The placenta not only gets the message that its job is complete, but it empties and becomes smaller & easier to birth. Once the placenta is released, the pregnancy is finally complete. Both mama and midwives take a deep breath.
In our practice, the placenta (still attached to the baby) is placed in a bowl or bag next to mom. Wherever baby goes, the placenta goes with them until the family is ready to cut the cord. Then comes our favorite part - exploring it together!
We give the parents, siblings, and whoever is interested a tour of “baby’s first penthouse.” We talk about any variations we may have known about during pregnancy or find during our exam, all the parts, pieces, and the cord. If they are curious, we encourage them to touch it.
What happens to the placenta after this is determined by the family - there are a lot of options (a topic for another day)!
Thank you to @theshiremothersam for the beautiful placenta prints she gifted to us. They were made from one of recent baby’s first home! 💜
This past week brought a very redemptive birth - for everyone involved. 18 months ago, on my 40th birthday, I (Shoshanah) transferred a 1st time mama to the hospital for a well-deserved epidural. I had been with her for the majority of 4.5 days, trying to encourage her baby to be born since she was over 42 weeks. The transfer was disappointing for everyone, but the family was still able to have a good birth experience.
When she returned to us with her second baby, we were all hopeful things would be different this time. Someone must have prayed REALLY hard! She went into spontaneous labor at 38w1d - a full month earlier than she had her first baby! Jill was out of town, I called @kindredbirthwithruth to join us, since she had assisted at the family’s first birth. I firmly believe that the people who are meant to be at a birth will be there, and everyone at this one felt that way about the team reuniting.
I sat back and watched this mama tap deeply into her instincts. Her movements lined up with the position of her baby and what he needed to navigate his way out. She ate & drank, her husband held her up physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Her doula supported them both, helping with positioning activities, bringing nourishing foods, learning to work the Polaroid camera (and getting some really great photos), and making sure I was updated with any big changes when I stepped away for a couple hours to nap. Ruth brought extra hands and a spiritual energy that helped this family feel spiritually seen in the harder moments. We sang over this mama as she wept in the pool - the intensity an overwhelming sensation.

We’d love to introduce you to Rio. Yesterday, he became a big brother for the first time!!! He did an amazing job holding space for his mama, and he’s very excited about sharing his toys with his new baby sister!

We adopted a beautiful Monstera today to come be a part of the Binah family! And like everyone else, she most definitely needs an IV!!! But she needs a name, y’all. Throw out some ideas for us! Help us name this gorgeous plant!
It’s been a long week and there’s long story to go with it. Stay tuned.
